Untitled (Overlooking Loch Muik)
Oil paint, oil pastel and encaustic medium on mixed materials, 183 x 125 cm
This new piece is part of my Lochnagar series 2019/2020.
It evolved from in-situ sketches of the glen whilst overlooking Loch Muik, part of the Lochnagar munro walk in the Cairngorms.
The materials sewn to create the base for this painting are largely non-traditional, and there is a tension created by the competing tautness and looseness of adjoining fabrics, and by the paint as it unexpectedly interacts with each surface. The layers of paint highlight the borders between materials, creating underlying rhythms and currents. The sewn line causes the thin strips of untethered fabric to come away from the painting, forming new skins, and in this materiality the tangibility and rawness of the experience of landscape is felt.
